Hi guys,
Some time ago I stumbled upon news about re-release of Republic of Rome - a board game by Valley Games (originally by Avalon Hills).
Obviously, today's board wargames cannot really compete with computer games about battle simulations. However this game is just excellent in the "campaign mode".
In essence, the gameplay concept is based on decision trade between major political figures (senators, generals, officers, families) who compete to win maximum influence and power, and in the same time need to cooperate to protect Rome (and their own interests) from different dangers (invasions, riots, rebels, competing power usurpators etc).

Mind that this game - while delivering engaging, compelling gameplay - managed to retain high level of historical accuracy which only added to overall immersion and fun. This is the feat. (Really, Rome Total War seems really flat (if not boring) and unrelated campaign to play compared to this one).

But let me be clear - I don't intend to make any allusion to upcoming LGS roman title. What is really noteworthy is that such a gameplay concept isn't really limited only to roman republic and could be adapted to other types of government including single ruler and different historical periods. Actually, in each state there are internal factions fighting eternally for influence and power.

Very, very inspiring, and frankly that's why I decided to sign in and make a small note for your attention. Enjoy.
A nice brief description and further info links are on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Rome_(game)
Thank you.

I remember this one.

The Softwave Roman game is too far into production to still change the basic design. The time-frame is more Late Imperial in this game, a nice grand strategy game in potential.

Thank you for a reply.
Gladly I will see what LGS roman title offers.
OK, but can you promise it is historically accurate? I mean - who is to make sure about it - LGS or that company that finishes it off? wink

It is definitely historical based, of course it is still a game, there is no fun in creating a historical simulation. Grin

It's too far into production and there's still none information on the game anywhere? That's really going to be a surprise release... giggle
